A data space is an infrastructure that enables secure and controlled data sharing between participants, while allowing each participant to retain full control over its own data. It is bases on shared rules, standards, and governances frameworks that ensure trust, legal compliance and interoperability across sectors. 

A data space typically includes:

• Governance frameworks that define rules and policies
• Interoperability standards for data sharing
• Security and identity services to protect data
• Procedures and models that enable participants to collaborate securely and exchange data in a controlled manner

These elements ensure trust, transparency, and interoperability across participating organisations. 

Gaia-X is a European initiative to create a federated and sovereign framework for digital services. It is not a new cloud provider, but as a common set of rules and standards that allows different secure cloud and data services to interoperate seamlessly. Gaia-X is based on European values of openness, transparency, and trust, giving participants control over their data.

Europe needs Gaia-X primarily to strengthen its digital sovereignty. This means reducing our dependency on non-European cloud providers and avoiding “vendor lock-in”. It creates a competitive market where organisations can choose services freely. Furthermore, Gaia-X provides a trusted framework to ensure all data handling is compliant with European regulations.

Gaia‑X is one of the frameworks and partner initiatives that supports the creation of federated data ecosystems by providing principles and trust foundations for interoperability, sovereignty, and transparency. It complements other frameworks and standards used in data spaces.

A federated infrastructure is a “network of networks.” Instead of one single company owning the entire cloud, different service providers agree to operate under a common set of rules. This allows them to interoperate securely, meaning their services can communicate and work together. Crucially, each provider maintains full control and sovereignty over their own infrastructure and the data they manage. It’s about collaboration without centralisation.

Data spaces can work with cloud infrastructures, but they are not cloud platforms themselves. Instead, they use cloud and other technologies, including sovereign infrastructures, to enable secure, governed, and interoperable data sharing between participants. The focus is on controlled data exchange rather than providing a single cloud service.

They are complementary parts of the same puzzle. Think of it like building a house:

• Gaia-X provides a trust framework, a critical component to build trust between securely identified participants.
• IDSA (International Data Spaces Association) provides a data space connector, a critical component enabling secure and controlled data transfer between participants.
• DSSC (Data Spaces Support Centre): A European Commission‑funded centre coordinating and supporting data space implementation and best practices.
• BDVA, MyData, and others: Bring expertise in data innovation, human‑centric data governance, and community coordination.
